OPP have released the name of the truck driver killed in Monday's crash.
The driver of the Straight truck has been identified as 38 year-old Christopher Fulton of London. The other 10 deceased persons have been brought to the coroner's office in Toronto where identification will be made.
The tiny village of Hampstead northeast of Stratford was the scene of a horrific two-vehicle crash that killed 10 migrant workers and the driver of a straight truck. Investigation revealed that at 4:51pm, a van carrying 13 migrant workers was westbound on Line 47 when it was struck in the intersection by a straight truck traveling southbound on Perth Road 107. Two people have been sent to Stratford General Hospital and one person has been airlifted to Hamilton.
It is unconfirmed at the moment if the van ran the stop sign, but it appears as through the crash was caused by driver error.
Perth County OPP Constable Kees Wijnands says the magnitude of the tragedy is what has caught everyone's attention. "We're looking at 11 dead people. That's something that we never see around here."
The tragedy comes less than a month after the Perth County OPP carried out their "Stop & Look" campaign targeting drivers that failed to stop and yield at intersections. The campaign was initiated when it became apparent that failing to stop or yield at intersections resulted in a quarter of Perth County's fatal crashes. Wijnands elaborates:
Wijnands commented that the number of fatalities even surpasses the largest crashes on the 401, and that he's never seen anything like this in his career. "It's kind of hard to grasp," said the Constable.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call Perth County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
The affected roads have since been reopened.
